Serving more than 7 million people in our region, the Houston Galveston Area Council is the cornerstone to address issues that cross city limits and county lines every day for 13 county governments, 107 cities, and 11 school districts. Serving as an instrument of local government cooperation, promoting the region’s orderly development and the safety and welfare of its citizens; our planning and service programs span a broad spectrum from transportation and homeland security planning to workforce development, assistance to the elderly, 9-1-1 service, watershed protection, and disaster recovery.
H-GAC is seeking a Planner to join the Sustainable Development team within our Community and Environmental Planning department. This department improves the quality of life for residents across the region through community development, socio-economic modeling, solid waste management and recycling, and water quality plans and projects.
As a Planner, you will have the opportunity to develop regional plans and programs that address economic development and resiliency, community enhancement and downtown revitalization. You will be responsible for collecting and analyzing data, researching and recommending funding opportunities, and responding to inquiries and providing technical assistance for ongoing projects.
The Planner is a key support role, giving the ideal candidate the opportunity to lead and assist with the preparation and execution of committee meetings and training workshops. Strong project management, communication, and presentation skills are crucial for success in this role.
What are we looking for in a candidate? We are looking for someone who excels in traditional planning but who is equally adept at thinking outside of the box, brainstorming, and bringing new ideas to the table.
The successful candidate will have at a minimum:
- Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Regional Planning or related field.
- Three (3) years’ experience in urban or regional planning.
- Thorough knowledge of pertinent policies, regulations and best management practices.
- Ability to plan and effectively manage complex, long-term projects.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Five (5) years’ experience in urban and regional planning, monitoring and reporting.
