The City of Cedar Falls is seeking Planner I candidates.  This position will perform a variety of professional level duties such as providing information and assistance to developers, the general public, and outside agencies; review building site plans and issue land use and related permits; assist in enforcing the City’s zoning ordinance and notify property owners of violations; respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints; review, evaluate, and prepare written and oral reports to the Board of Adjustment, Planning and Zoning Commission, and City Council regarding subdivisions, site plans, rezonings, and other planning related issues; attend meetings for, provide support to, and complete administrative tasks for a variety of boards, commissions and City Council; assist with long range planning projects; and prepare grant applications for special projects. Position assists with the CDBG entitlement program, as needed, which may include: preparing and submitting HUD reports, required plans, and procedures required to implement CDBG projects and/or programs. The position works under the direction of the Planning and Community Services Manager.

This position requires strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to work with various boards, commissions, departments and the general public. The successful candidate must be an effective public speaker and possess proven writing skills.  A self-motivated, highly enthusiastic, and technically competent candidate is sought.  An ability to complete multiple projects in a timely and effective manner is necessary, and the ability to create maps and perform analysis in GIS is desirable.  The position may require attendance at evening meetings and public hearings, as well as limited field work; therefore, the employee must be flexible in their scheduling. 

Minimum experience and education requirements include: one year experience required in urban planning, housing, or economic development (internship experience may be considered) and a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in planning, housing, urban design, landscape architecture economic/community development, public administration or closely related field.  

The FY20 pay range is $19.824-32.216/hr. with the expected employment offer to be in the $19.824-26.00 range, depending on qualifications.    Post-offer, pre-employment physical and drug screen required for the successful candidate.  Completion of a questionnaire and forwarding of official transcripts will be required after a pool of qualified applicants is approved by the City’s Civil Service Commission.  Interviews may follow with selected candidates upon certification of a Civil Service list.
