Small Business Support VISTA
The selected AmeriCorps member will work closely with City staff and consultants supporting small businesses and entrepreneurs that are predominantly Latino and historically have struggled to receive equal resources, particularly in the Alisal neighborhood. Objectives will focus on implementing priority actions identified in the Alisal Vibrancy Plan Economic Development chapter including, but not limited to, supporting the development of a commercial property improvement incentive program, promote Alisal businesses by creating an online business directory and assisting with online presence and district branding.
The Alisal is located on the City of Salinas' east side and is home to a majority-minority population that is 94 percent Hispanic or Latino, with 33 percent of its residents living in poverty, compared to 21 percent of Salinas residents overall. The Alisal Vibrancy Plan is a community driven planning process that will communicate the collective vision of the residents and strategies for on-going collaboration and partnership between the City and community in addressing issues and opportunities specific to the Alisal. The Alisal Plan Support Team, comprised of five VISTA members, will work together on multifaceted strategies to alleviate poverty in the Alisal neighborhood by focusing on Economic Opportunity, Housing, Education and Literacy, and Healthy Futures. The ideal candidate will have a 4-year degree in planning, economic/community development, or another related field, and excellent communication skills. Economic/community development experience is a plus (internships and research counts). Bilingual proficiency in English/Spanish is beneficial, but not required.
AmeriCorps VISTA members serve with their host organizations for one year. Benefits of service include:
