Beaumont is looking for an experienced community builder to join our forward thinking, collaborative team supporting the vision of a growing, vibrant, and prosperous Beaumont in the new and exciting position of Senior Current Planner.

Reporting to the Manager, Current Planning you will be responsible for a wide range of complex and politically sensitive development applications, projects, and proposals.  You are a relationship builder who is politically savvy, has excellent communication and negotiation skills, and you will apply your solid understanding of land use policy and legislation to ensure Beaumont’s strategic and economic development goals are achieved.  You will be responsible for building and maintaining developer relations - promoting the City of Beaumont as the place to build and invest.

Your key areas of responsibility will include:

  • Leading the development application review process on commercial and other complex development applications, and acting as a liaison between the developer/stakeholder and the team to find ways to advance new development while ensuring alignment with planning policies, standards, and guidelines.
  • Reviewing, researching, analyzing, resolving conflict and preparing coordinated comments and reports on a wide range of more complex and politically sensitive development applications, projects and proposals.
  • Providing mentorship and expertise to the Current Planning Team on Land Use Bylaw interpretation and enforcement, and contributing to the continuous improvement of processes and service delivery.
  • Monitoring legislation, the Land Use Bylaw, and development trends, and providing recommendations to the Planning and Development Division on the impacts to bylaws, statutory plans, and other policies.
  • Building and maintaining positive relationships with stakeholders.
  • Attending and presenting at Council, Committee of the Whole, and Subdivision and Development Meetings, when necessary.

As the ideal candidate, you will have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in planning/urban design/geography or another relevant professional field with a minimum of 5 years’ experience related to municipal planning.  A Master’s degree and proven urban planning experience in a rapid growth environment is preferred.
  • Full (or eligible for) membership with the Alberta Professional Planners Institute (APPI) and the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP).
  • An International Association of Public Participation (IAP2) certificate or equivalent is preferred.
  • The ability to clearly and persuasively present ideas and recommendations that involve complex and politically sensitive issues to internal and external stakeholders, both verbally and written.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service oriented skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships, both internally and externally.
  • Broad understanding of municipal land use planning processes with an emphasis on land use policy, provincial legislation, the Edmonton Metropolitan Region Growth Plan, and other relevant statutory plans, policies and procedures.
  • Extensive knowledge of the functions of municipal government, the application of bylaws and policies, and of the preparation of correspondence, and orders under the authority of the Municipal Government Act for enforcement purposes.
  • Demonstrated project management skills and the ability to balance multiple projects and priorities to bring projects to completion using sound judgment, initiative, and creativity in a fast-paced, politically sensitive environment with minimal supervision. 
  • Demonstrated facilitation, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Knowledge of municipal and planning law.
  • Ability to provide effective direction and oversight to less experienced development officers and planners, and to administrative staff as required.  Previous supervisory and leadership experience is an asset.
  • Well-developed research, analytical, and strategic skills.
  • Experience and practical knowledge of computer software (ArcGIS, and Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

This full-time permanent position offers a salary range of $77,860 - $101,589 (starting salary is negotiable within this range based on suitable experience and qualifications), a competitive benefits package, opportunities for personal and professional growth, and a 35-hour work week.
