Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a nationwide network of trails from former rail lines and connecting corridors to build healthier places for healthier people, is seeking a Director of TrailNation Projects. This is a new position that will support the Vice Present of Trail Development in managing and implementing RTC’s TrailNation projects. The position is located in our national headquarters office in Washington, DC, though we may consider split time with our Baltimore office.

This is an excellent opportunity for a strategic, creative and results-oriented professional with exceptional people management, trail/active transportation planning and project implementation skills to join a successful organization in a leadership position.

Duties: Manage multiple TrailNation projects (two to three) at the strategic and operational levels to develop, lead and implement strategies that advance the TrailNation projects through all phases of development. Collaborate with and manage trail development staff who are charged with project-managing TrailNation projects.  Guide and troubleshoot hurdles and opportunities related to: diverse coalition building and partner engagement; active transportation and trail network planning; political will; GIS mapping; public engagement; public finance and funding; and external project communications.

Qualifications: Five to ten years of progressively responsible experience managing complex and multidisciplinary projects in active transportation, public policy or economic development. Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance. Expertise in one or more of the following: trail development, active transportation planning, economic development, public finance, public health, or social equity. Strong oral and written communication, and interpersonal skills. Spark imagination and creativity. Willingness to travel (20-30 percent); and bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in urban/transportation planning, conservation planning, public administration, public health, real estate or a related field.
