With a population of 55,000, Novato has more than 3,600 acres of open space, a thriving local economy of biotech and technology companies, and a high-achieving school district. 

Reporting to the City Manager, the Community Development Director oversees all activities of the department, coordinates activities with other City departments and outside agencies, conducts strategic planning for the department, and provides highly complex technical and administrative support to the City Manager. Divisions within Community Development include planning, code enforcement, and building. The department also manages the City’s affordable housing and sustainability programs and initiatives for the City. 

A sense of civic engagement, a strong sense of public service, comfortable public speaking, pro-business-friendly approach, customer service driven, process and change orientation mentality, creativity and solution-oriented, visionary and strong leadership, management and mentoring skills and a background that includes economic development and collaboration with businesses and other community agencies will serve the candidate well. The Director will be assisting in the implementing the City’s economic development goals and sustainability programs; additionally, the City is working on finalizing the general plan.
