Pierre Charles L'Enfant laid out the unique grid of Washington, D.C. in 1791, founding a new city on the Potomac. In L'Enfant's design, grand avenues criss-cross the grid, dotted by grand circles and plazas. The plan was controversial and L'Enfant was sacked, but many of his ideas still made it through.
