Atlanta's 'Road Diet'

Metro Atlanta is trying to turn an underutilized four-lane road in downtown into a bicycle path. Is this a good idea or suicide bike path?
"Metro Atlanta is entering the next stage in bicycle and pedestrian planning -- using existing asphalt to make room for bicyclists and pedestrians.Two pilot projects take different approaches but aim for the same results -- to reconfigure our roads so there are pathways for non-motorized modes of transportation."
