Builders Curse 'Smart Growth Zealot'

5 April 2003 - 1:00pm

Gov. James E. McGreevey who has vowed to stamp out sprawl is seen by many builders as a "smart growth zealot."

"It is no surprise that Mr. McGreevey has riled the homebuilding industry in his push to turn the nation's most densely populated state into a model for controlled growth. As part of his agenda, pristine rural areas would be preserved, decaying cities would be reinvigorated and suburbs fed by rail lines would be targeted for more concentrated development. His vision, one of the most far-reaching ever proposed by a governor, would be carried out through a battery of land-use restrictions, financial incentives and steep development fees to shoo away builders from ecologically sensitive places."

Under the proposal, the government would assign the populace the task of counting and mapping dog droppings as a first step to greater penalties for owners who fail to clean up after their mutts.
