A Major Victory For Environmentalists

Republicans joined Democrats in the U.S. Senate to quash the Bush administration's plans to open Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling.
'Environmentalists scored a major victory yesterday when eight Senate Republicans departed from their party line and voted with Democrats to reject a plan that would have allowed oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge...White House officials had argued that drilling in the Alaskan refuge would reduce American dependence on foreign oil and bolster national security in a time of war against Iraq...[Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska] showed his acerbic side, threatening to punish lawmakers who voted against drilling."
