Car Collision-Avoidance System Being Developed
11 March 2003 - 1:00pm
MIT is developing a collision-avoidance system for cars.
"Feron said he wants to 'kill the shockwave' of traffic that forces drivers to make sudden stops, which can cause chain-reaction accidents. He plans to use in-vehicle wireless communications technology, GPS and advanced traffic-flow models to build the system...The advance warning system would give drivers additional time to react before they see the brake lights immediately in front of them. Even a few cars equipped with such an indicator would allow those vehicles to slow down sooner, alerting other vehicles around them."

One great asset of this part of town, and other older neighborhoods across America, is something as simple as sidewalks, which make it easier to break out of your private sphere by taking a walk and talking to neighbors. That's an impossible dream in many new subdivisions.
