Can Houston Be Retrofit?

Houston has never made small plans. Now the city is developing an ambitious plan to retrofit a city that has been shaped by sprawl.

"Founded at the edge of a bayou by real estate hustlers in 1836, with a map sketched upon a top hat, Houston invented itself as Texas' biggest city through grit, muscle and a knack for putting things where they didn't logically belong... And so when it came time to tackle one of Houston's greatest urban challenges, creating a sense of centeredness in the heart of sprawling Space City, U.S.A., they used the Houston method: penciling it in on the map, whether it belonged there or not."
