City's Struggle For A Stronger Downtown Is Succeeding

Though it still faces challenges, the revival of downtown Seattle is succeeding.

"...even in the midst of its revival, downtown Seattle faces challenges: The slumping economy has pushed retail and office vacancies up. Some key blocks still struggle with crime and drugs...Seattle has made strides in creating downtown housing for very low-income residents and for people who can afford higher-cost housing...Many real estate developers contend the city needs to adjust its zoning downtown and in nearby neighborhoods to encourage greater residential density. The idea is to get more people living near downtown and transportation hubs."
