Fastest Growing 'Boomer' Suburbs

The suburbs of major metropolitan areas are aging faster than the nation as a whole.
This Living Cities Census survey reveals that the suburbs of majormetropolitan areas are aging faster than the nation as a whole. Southernand western "Sunbelt" suburbs grew older as they attracted unprecedentednumbers of Boomers, pre-retirees and seniors; northern "Rustbelt"suburbsaged as their under-35 populations dwindled. "# Baby Boomers-those aged 35 to 54-accounted for 31 percent of total suburban population in 2000, up from 26.6 percent in 1990. The suburbs with the largest Boomer populations were located in high-end metros like San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington D.C., as well as university areas like Ann Arbor, Columbus, and Raleigh-Durham."
