Sprawl threatens the survial of the nation's eastern white pinelumber in southern Maine.
Here in this rural town 32 miles west of Portland, people sense what's coming next. Now it's Baldwin's turn to be engulfed by the expanding wave of development leapfrogging from Portland... At risk in the future is the long-term survival of the nation's white-pine lumber industry, which is centered right here in southern and southwestern Maine.The difficulty of harvesting timber in an increasingly suburban landscape is making it harder for mills to economically obtain their supply of wood, said the owners and managers of several mills in the region.
