'Swamp Monster' Delays Highway Construction

A Maori tribe in New Zealand has halted construction of a multimillion dollar highway because it is too close to the home of a "swamp monster" capable of causing traffic deaths.
"The highway holdup highlights a growing awareness of, and respect for, Maori culture in this South Pacific country of 4 million...Taniwha are spiritual creatures to the indigenous Maori. The monsters act as guardians for landmarks..."
