Douglas Kelbaugh discusses the three schools of urbanism: New Urbanism, Everyday Urbanism and Post Urbanism.
"Will the American metropolis avoid the pitfalls of increasing sprawl, congestion, pollution, and social polarization? Douglas Kelbaugh, FAIA, dean of the college of architecture and urban planning at the University of Michigan, hopes that better metropolitan policy planning and design will ease the growing tensions within and between urban and suburban communities. In this article, he provides an overview of three major paradigms in contemporary architecture and urban planning and calls for a more coordinated regional approach to urbanism, one that places community and the public realm--civitas--at its foundation."
