With the economic benefit of redevelopment along Pittsburgh's river well understood, it's time to survey all the new and reused riverfront properties coming online.
Mark Belko surveys the redevelopment scene along Pittsburgh's rivers, which have gone from "dreary to dynamic" in recent years: "From the North Shore to the South Side to the East End, developers that once spurned the land along the rivers now are clamoring to build on them."
Belko reported in March on a study that found $130 million worth of investment in trails and other public open space had paid off to the tune of $4.1 billion in development investment. Fast forward to today, and Belko has plenty of projects to choose from, including the largest project, the "$1 billion redevelopment of the former LTV Coke Works along the Monongahela in Hazelwood into a mix of offices, housing, and research and development space."
