Arizona Republic columnist Jon Talton sees the argument against subsidizing rail as the "Big Lie."
"Trains are popular anywhere they are well-funded and operated. They are far more energy efficient than airplanes or masses of automobiles. They represent options for travelers, especially as flying becomes more unpleasant, frightening and time-consuming. After Sept. 11, an efficient rail-passenger system became a national security imperative, as even conservative icon George Will recognized."
