No Growth Near Wells
9 September 2002 - 2:00pm
Fast-growing Washington Township is the first New Jersey town to pass a wellhead-protection measure.
"The Township Council unanimously adopted an ordinance that will restrict development near public drinking wells... The ordinance creates concentric classifications around six wells that take water from the Kirkwood-Cohansey aquifer, which in some places is as close as 20 feet to the surface. For instance, rules for the first tier surrounding a well ban industries that use any type of chemical that could spill into the ground, such as photo processing, dry cleaning and medical laboratories."
