A Daring Vision For New York

In the last three decades New York has seen few major public planning projects. To maintain its position as a global city, New York needs to "think big."

"One way or another, something will have to replace the enormous office, retail and transportation complex represented by the World Trade Center. That new development, whatever its ultimate mix of uses, will by its very nature involve the large-scale public planning that New York once carried out almost routinely. It is no wonder that the effort to get up to speed should be marked by an almost audible grinding of gears.Yet if there is reason for concern, there is also reason for optimism."

The areas where we have severe blight and indications of more blight to come are basically the same as they ever were. How in the world are we ever going to move our community development selves into an alternative future that thinks differently about the challenges we face in our cities and low-income suburban and rural communities?
