Historic House Razed To Make Way For Mansion
11 August 2002 - 9:00am
A pre-Civil War house built by one of the Sewickley Valley's founding families is demolished to make way for a mansion.
"A land trust acting on behalf of Glen Meakem, Chief Executive Officer of the Internet auction company FreeMarkets, paid $1.4 million for the Shields house, for which construction began in 1849. Meakem bought the adjoining brick house, which will also be torn down. He plans to build a home on what will become a 10-acre estate. Edgeworth Borough residents had no legal means to stop the demolition. Several years ago, the Borough's planning commission had rejected establishing either a historic zoning ordinance or a historic district."

Its very unsuitability for an urban center justifies its current usage as a suburban or ex-urban pattern.
