Segway Sales Are Anemic

12 July 2002 - 11:00am

Sales of $8,500 Segway Human Transporter, have been very slow, but could skyrocket when the device becomes available to the general public next year.

"The Segway regulatory team, led by Matt Dailida, has moved quickly to lobby state governments to allow the Segway on sidewalks. So far, no state has passed laws discouraging its use. In fact, 29 states have already allowed it. California's Senate has given the green light, and a full vote in the Assembly should happen in a few weeks, according to Dailida. Customers: Here, progress is mixed. Federal Express, which was supposed to have an early deal in the works, dropped the idea. Other early users, like the National Park Service, Amazon.com, Michelin and GE Plastics are still testing."
