"Lakeville officials and neighbors for years have been talking about what to do with the site, which is located in a once-rural community of cranberry bogs and dense woods. The town is threatened by development, and local officials are determined to control what happens to the hospital's open land. The officials drafted a development plan to discourage large-scale residential or retail development. But they learned only recently that the land would be auctioned for public funding of campaigns."
