The 'Art' Of Zoning

A zoning board has to decide if a performance is art.

"A clothing and art shop, wants city approval to stage live rock shows and other performances [and] had formally requested the board for permission to 'provide live entertainment for opening of artwork exhibits.' The use is likely a permitted one for her location...The city zoning code...does not address blurred lines among graphic and installation arts, music, dance and performance art. Usually live acts are permitted in restaurants and bars. The board members are lawyers, not art critics."
