Call For Slow-growth Referendum In Broward County
9 May 2002 - 2:00pm
Civic groups in Broward County, FL. call for a county-wide growth slowdown.
Broward County wants to expand its International Airport by extending the south runway. Environmentalists argue the proposal will turn parts of Hollywood and the Town of Dania Beach into slums, and pollute two coastal parks. Opposition is growing, and Steve Welsch, head of Hollywood's Council of Civic Associations, points to "unbridled growth" as the cause."Fearing that Broward County is racing toward a future of double-decker highways through a fog of pollution, Hollywood, Florida civic association leaders want a referendum aimed at slowing county growth."
