The City of Auburn, a dynamic and progressive university community, located in East Central Alabama (56,908 pop.), is currently searching for a Principal Planner.

While candidates will be expected to have a sound knowledge base in the fundamental principles and practices of planning, the Planning Director is specifically looking for a self-motivated, self-starter who can formulate recommendations for change in areas of strategic importance for the City.

Specifically, the successful candidate for this position will have the analytical skills necessary to adequately assess the City’s comprehensive plan,CompPlan 2030 (adopted October 2011),and make sound recommendations to the Director for changes to the zoning ordinance in an effort to accomplish the vision set forth in the Plan over time.  Specific work efforts will include implementation of the Renew Opelika Corridor Redevelopment Plan and the Downtown Master Plan, among others.

This position is one of two (2) principal planner positions in a Department of seven (7) members.  It is a new position that is the product of a recent reorganization of the Department designed to streamline departmental work flow and increase efficiency while also developing teams and participative approaches to problem-solving.  The existing principal planner position has a long-range planning emphasis.  This position will have a “current” planning emphasis and will assist the Director in supervising planning staff engaged in current planning tasks, including site plan and subdivision review and providing support to the Board of Zoning Adjustment, Planning Commission, and Historic Preservation Commission.

A baccalaureate degree in urban planning or a closely related field, five years of experience in a comparable position and AICP certification are required. A master’s degree in urban planning or related field is preferred.

The salary range is $4,590.85 - $5,481.72/month, depending upon qualifications. The City of Auburn has an excellent benefits package.
