New England Town Moves To Preserve Open Space

The Town of Freeport, Maine approved an ordinance requiring developers to custer homes and preserve open space.
"The Freeport Town Council on Tuesday voted to ban conventional subdivisions and require developers to set aside permanent open space. In doing so, Freeport becomes one of the first towns in Maine to completely rewrite its subdivision ordinance around the goal of open-space protection. The new subdivision ordinance - approved with 6-1 vote - fundamentally changes the way residential development will occur in Freeport, said Town Councilor David Soley. "Cookie-cutter subdivisions are out the window," he said..."
