The Economist reviews "Auto Mobile: How the Car Changed Life", by Ruth Brandon.

"The impact of the car on society and the environment is so profound that it is difficult to comprehend what life was like before the early pioneers put to the road. The first motorists were mostly toffs, usually ridiculed and sometimes physically attacked. Once ownership spread from the elite, the car completely changed the face of cities, gave birth to the suburbs and along the way helped to engineer a social revolution."
