Commuter Rail Hopes Second Track Increases Ridership

Luring drivers to South Florida's Tri-Rail trains has always been a struggle, but the most ambitious project in the rail agency's 12-year history -- addition of a second track -- could make the system more attractive to drivers now taking

Tri-Rail shares a single set of tracks for more than 30 miles with CSX freight trains and Amtrak passenger trains. That often forces Tri-Rail trains to pull onto a siding. About 9,000 passengers board Tri-Rail each weekday. Officials predict that doubletracking, along with increased gridlock on area roads, will quadruple the commuter train's daily ridership in 12 years.
