Sustainable Critical Infrastructure Planning:
Urban Planning and Design
The Engineering Systems and Management Department at the Masdar Institute invites applications for full-time faculty positions in urban planning and design with experience in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Applicants must hold a doctorate in urban and regional planning, or an equivalent degree in a related field, and must demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching and research aimed at solutions to problems in urban planning and design.
Candidates are expected to have an active research agenda and practice that utilize applications of digital visualization, GIS, 2-D and 3-D graphic media and modeling in urban design & planning. Other Research interests may include work related to sustainable urbanism, housing and community development, environment behavior, and the use of digital technologies in urban design and planning. Technical skills in GIS and graphic with relevance to urban and regional planning would be considered an asset.
The successful candidate is expected to teach introductory and advanced courses in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with applications to urban planning and sustainability to a student body having a wide range of abilities and experiences. It is also expected that the successful candidate will have the capacity to teach courses in physical planning, spatial planning, advanced graphic and visual communication, metropolitan and neighborhood planning, growth management, and infrastructure systems. The candidate is expected to contribute to the department’s emphasis on sustainability.
Applicants must have demonstrated ability (or strong potential) to develop interdisciplinary research individually, in collaboration with other faculty, and with industry partners. They should possess strong communication skills, and the ability and commitment to teach at the post-graduate level and advise MSc and PhD level students in their research. Innovative teaching methods and curriculum development capability are strongly encouraged. Applicants should have very good interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate across disciplines. Successful candidates will be expected to seek external funding, engage with local and international stakeholders, and support service and outreach activities at the Institute. The finalist should also possess a commitment to take a leadership role in mentoring graduate students and developing research projects focusing on urban design, planning, and sustainability.
Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, located in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E., is a private, not-for-profit, independent, graduate-level, research-driven institute developed with the support and cooperation of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The goal of the Institute is to develop, over a period of years, indigenous R&D capacity in Abu Dhabi, addressing issues of importance to the region in critical areas such as: renewable energy, sustainability, environment, water resources and microelectronics.
