Politics played a more important role than science in the Senate's decision about fuel efficiency standards
"Would it kill you to drive a more efficient car? As you might expect, what's considered true depends on who's answering the question...[Mike Morrissey, a spokesman for General Motors said ] despite the advent of safety innovations such as airbags, crumple zones and improved restraint systems -- a light car with such equipment is always less safe than a heavy car with the same equipment...the side in favor of stricter standards is also employing a bit of spin, suggesting that stricter standards will aid the U.S. in the fight against terrorism."
