Saving Suburban Farms

Despite its proximity to Washington, D.C., fast-growing Montgomery County, Md., leads the nation in saving farmland.

Just outside the Capital Beltway, a southern Maryland county has curtailed the development of its rural land by compensating property owners for the right to do so. "Here in upper Montgomery County, what you see now may well be what you see in 10, 20, or even 50 years," writes Arnold Berke.
