Area Development Online looks for the most desirable locations to locate a business, and finds that smaller cities are outperforming larger ones. Austin, Texas was the indisputable winner.

Denver and Seattle, no small potatoes, round out the Top 3.

In fact, this ranking is sort of a list of lists - the ranking is made up of rankings from other sources like Brookings and Fast Company. Austin was the only city to appear on 10 or more of the rankings.

Texas comes up several times in the Top 20, with Dallas, San Antonio and the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown area all ranking.
