Self-Steering Buses On Course For Las Vegas
Buses will be steering themselves through the streets of Las Vegas beginningin 2003 by means of an optical guidance system incorporating cameras, computers, and motors
The system, called Civis, features a camera that reads coded marks on the roadway. Any deviation fromthe coded path is automatically corrected by a motor on the steering column. The Times reports that 10 of the new buses will be delivered for use in LasVegas in 2003. Passengers enter the buses at four entry points at groundlevel, and the bus floor is flat from front to back because there is nodrive shaft or transmission. Civis buses in France contain globalpositioning systems that transmit location information, letting people atupcoming stops know when the bus will arrive. The Las Vegas buses willcontain the same equipment.
