Reducing Crime With Public Spaces in London

5 October 2010 - 10:00am

Officials in London are relying on the creation of 86 new public spaces throughout the city to cut down on criminal behavior.

"Twenty projects are already completed — including Oxford Circus, Camden High Street and Windrush Square in Brixton — at a cost of £43 million.

Mr Moylan told the Standard: 'It's not an extravagant programme but it will help people feel proud of their area.'"

London Mayor Boris Johnson has touted the plan, and argues that the creation of these public spaces will take small but necessary steps towards thinking about neighborhoods in a more civilized manner.

If hundreds of people in your community raised reasonable concerns about a planning program you developed, how would you respond? Perhaps you might call a community meeting, or ask community elected officials to reach out to community leaders.
