Fort Lauderdale's Landfill Golf Course

19 July 2001 - 4:00am

A former toxic dump in Fort has caused cancer in the surrounding community. A golf course is proposed for the site.

"A landfill poisoned with toxic chemicals may become Fort Lauderdale's next golf course... Commissioners cited residents in the predominantly black neighborhood around the landfill who support the golf course as a community improvement." More than 30 companies dumped toxins, including cancer-causing agents into the landfill between 1954 and 1978, when the landfill was closed. The city-run landfile then processed 480 tons of trash daily, burning garbage and dumping the ash on the landfill.

It's all too easy for projects to claim that they will be successful places, and all too hard to tell ahead of time which ones actually will.
