Tear Down Claiborne Ave. Expressway, Says Coalition

A group of activists and planners has released a report showing how tearing down the Claiborne Ave. Expressway in New Orleans and turning it into a boulevard would benefit the neighborhood and the city.

Bruce Eggler writes that the report "says eliminating the expressway would have numerous benefits, such as removing an eyesore, reducing noise and air pollution, increasing opportunities for public transit, and promoting investment that would eliminate blight and create economic development in the Treme and 7th Ward neighborhoods."

The study says the impact on travel time would only be a few minutes.

In 2008, the Congress for New Urbanism put the Claiborne Ave. Expressway on a list of "Freeways Without Futures."

Needs Unbiased Study

The removal of the Claiborne expressway may indeed be a good move for the New Orleans area, but there has yet to be an unbiased, objective study of the potential impacts. There's no guarantee that removing it will have the revitalizing effects that people claim it will, and the negative impacts on transportation, especially freight, may cause more harm than good. This report states clearly that the authors were in support of the project before the "study" was conducted. I look forward to an objective study, one that will hopefully support with the assertions of this report. Unfortunately nothing will really move forward until that happens.
