An Architectural 'Love Letter' to NY
14 July 2010 - 6:00am
The AIA Guide to New York City was last updated 10 years ago, and the latest version shows an explosion of glassy residential towers. James Russell says the guide is "monumental."
Russell takes a walk with Fran Leadon, who was tasked with updating the classic.
Leadon told Russell, "I wanted to keep the tone of earlier editions, which were clearly written by someone walking around and living in the city."
Russell writes that the Guide "...obsessively details the greatness of well-known neighborhoods, while luring the reader to bucolic corners of Staten Island and the hidden Art Deco grandeur of the Bronx."
