Hanging Out at the Virtual Mall
14 June 2010 - 2:00pm
Mall operator Westfield Group says it is developing a completely virtual "mall" shopping space, and is seeking retailers to rent spaces.
David Bodamer writes that Westfield's plan to go online is a bit "hazy", and he is skeptical of the entire venture. Can an online space approximate the browsing and bargain hunting experience of an actual mall space?
He writes, "Ultimately what Westfield is envisioning may be about driving traffic to its centers as much as it is about generating online sales. It also sounds like it potentially be about developing new tenants–finding online concepts that it can promote and then groom to the point where they may want to build physical stores."
