Life Away From The Power Grid

Rural areas of the Dominican Republic are not connected to the nation's power grid but villagers benefit from solar energy powered by the Carribean sun.
"[I]n the land of abundant sunshine, solar energy is much cheaper than the alternatives...while the country's urban centers have been plagued by 14-hour blackouts and violent protests in recent weeks following the privatization of the electric company, [solar power users] have kept their lights on."
