Urbana Discovers New Urbanism

Planned subdivision in Urbana, IL, inspired by New Urbanism, receives mixed reactions from residents.
"More than 60 acres of east Urbana will have a newer, old look to it during the next 3 1/2 years...The $35 million development has components of new urbanism or neotraditional developments, a trend in planning that started about 10 years ago. The subdivision has smaller lots and narrower streets -- rather than the trend of bigger lots, wider streets -- in an attempt to build a more pedestrian-friendly atmosphere."
