"Funky, Casual" Urban Market Coming to Downtown San Jose

Former San Jose Mayor Tom McEnery is heading up an ambitious project to transform a mediocre public space into a Granville Market for Silicon Valley.

Steve Borkhagen, who is leasing spaces in the project, told reporter Gary Singh that they modeled the project on Vancouver's Granville Market.

"We thought it had more of a funky casual approachability that some of the other markets don't," Borkenhagen said. "The Ferry Market [in San Francisco] is more upscale, whereas Granville is everything-you've got the suits there, you've got casual people off the street. ... We're not trying to be Valley Fair or Santana Row. We're trying for more of the opposite."

San Pedro Square Public Market is scheduled to open late this summer.
