Graduate Schools in Canada vs. US

I am currently working on applications for masters in urban planning programs in the US and Canada. I have read previous forums discussing McGill and the lack of opportunity for Montreal internships without mastery of the french language, but I am wondering about academics.

How does McGill or University of Calgary match up to say Portland State, NYU or Columbia?

Also....for some disciplines, the name of your graduate program is a big deal. What about planning?
