The Age of Tolls

27 October 2009 - 9:00am

Robert McCartney reports on the coming onslaught of toll roads in the D.C. area, and the possibility of a 'vehicle miles traveled' option in the future.

"The new tolls on individual roads would seem in retrospect to be a minor irritant if motorists have to start paying for every trip to the supermarket. The revolutionary "vehicle miles traveled" pricing system would use GPS, cellphone towers or other mechanisms to bill drivers. The rates could vary according to location, hour and size of vehicle."

Tood-a-loo tolls

Tolls are an irritant in addition to a traffic hazard, particularly on major highways where people speed into and out of them. There are better ways to raise revenue for the state and to get people out of their cars.

Maybe we should blame Thomas Jefferson. He was the godfather of the urban sprawl racket in America.
