The Sonoran Institute seeks a talented and skilled individual to help us bring an economic perspective to land use issues in Arizona’s Sun Corridor. We are looking for someone with the ability to develop sound economic analysis of the implications of various growth and land-use planning patterns. This position will also conduct policy analysis of the likely outcomes of proposals to modernize the management of state trust land.
We are looking for an individual who is skilled at working with leaders to build broad bipartisan support for enhanced land policy. You will have the opportunity to work with key leaders and groups, including business leaders, smart growth and conservation advocates, education leaders, agricultural producers, developers, outdoor recreation advocates, county and municipal officials, legislative leaders, the governor’s office, the Arizona state land department, and many others. To be successful in this position, you should bring proven skills to convene stakeholders and opinion leaders for thoughtful dialogue and problem solving.
The position is based in the Institute’s Tucson office and is part of the Sonoran Institute Research Team, reporting to the Land and Resource Economist. There will be frequent travel to Phoenix, as this position works closely with the Sun Corridor Legacy Director and program staff. The Sonoran Institute Research Team is a multi-disciplinary group that works collaboratively to apply research and analytical expertise. Our Sun Corridor Legacy Program develops and promotes collaborative approaches to better manage growth and development for one of the most rapidly urbanizing regions in the United States.
Education & Experience: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in urban or regional planning with strong background in statistics, economics, policy analysis and spatial analysis and an understanding of natural resource economics, land economics, or similar field desirable; and five years experience in research, education, policy, and public outreach on the economics of land use and conservation in the West.
