Utopias in Miniature

27 August 2009 - 12:00pm

As Germany's elections near, the makers of 'Miniature Wonderland' invite political parties to use their scale models to show the public what their utopia would look like.

"Parties from across the political spectrum were each allocated one square meter (about 11 square feet) of space to create their vision of a perfect society in model railway scale."

"We wanted to do something to mark the upcoming election," Miniature Wonderland's Sebastian Drechsler told SPIEGEL ONLINE. "We wanted to give people a direct insight into the major parties and their policies."

Boring big parties

It sounds to me like the two biggest parties (CDU and SPD) had the most boring responses, while the smaller parties had more fun with it.

Model Cities as a way create political debate

This is a great idea. Far to often politians have no clue about the built environment. Creating a model of a city and having them respond to it will force them to think in 3-D.

It is worth pondering that successful downtown stadiums and hostels extend back at least to the Colosseum environs in Rome, nearly 2,000 years ago.
