Clark Williams-Derry has been searching the horizon for the Moby Dick of smart growth statistics, and he's found it in a new study out of UC Irvine.

"University of California researchers David Brownstone and Thomas Golob have looked at the relationship between residential density and driving habits, and concluded that:

Comparing two California households that are similar in all respects except residential density, a lower density of 1,000 housing units per square mile...implies an increase of 1,200 miles driven per year...and 65 more gallons of fuel used per household.

Thar she blows!!"

Density is the answer, but buildings are the problem - 80% of the emmissions problem comes from buildings. Do a story on NYC's extraordinary energy code. Trouble is -- all the money folks are busy talking new build, green this and that and that ain't where the problem is... there is your Moby mojo....
