Turf Troubles

When mandatory water conservation rules took effect in Glendale, California, homeowner David Wood installed artificial turf to maintain the green front yard emblematic of the American Dream. But his new fake lawn is against the law.

City regulations say that fake turf is illegal anywhere it can be seen from the street. Wood is hoping to clear those regulations.

"But in order to receive final city approval and adhere to his approved landscaping plan, he will have to replace the artificial turf with live grass. The new sod, though, requires daily watering to take root, which would violate the two-days-a-week irrigation limits imposed by the Crescenta Valley Water District. But if the grass dies, he can be cited by code enforcement for dead landscaping in a front setback."

Native, low-water-use plants are probably illegal as well.
