New housing developments feature high-speed direct fiber-optic networks as a perk for buyers.
"Several phone companies have experimented with direct fiber connections to homes as well, often at new housing developments that pitch high-speed connections as a perk for home buyers...Officials at SBC said it's unlikely many existing neighborhoods will get direct fiber connections any time soon, however. Most people, they said, don't have much demand for speeds in excess of a regular DSL or cable modem connection."
